Man of Kent Regatta - 12th June 2021

Over 55 boats on the water

Tankerton Bay Sailing Club were delighted to hold this year’s prestigious East Kent Yachting Associations Man of Kent Regatta on Saturday the 12th June 2021.

With very light to non-existent winds, the three races planned turned into one very long slow race. Nonetheless, over 55 boats of the 60 registered made the journey to Tankerton to compete in the Regatta. The "all in" race included boats of all classes from the toppers up to the F18 and Nacra F20 catamarans.

It proved a day for the light wind boats and all the prizes went to those sailing mono hulls - with the catamarans left struggling to compete with their handicaps.

The overall Man of Kent winners were Chris Thomas and Verity Hopkins in their RS200 from Broadstairs, followed home by Michael Dyer from Herne Bay in his 29er with third place going to Simon Green from Downs in his Finn.

The overall prizes were shared amongst 6 North Kent Sailing Clubs – and it was great to see both the diversity of clubs, but also boats and sailors.

First Lady home, winning the Maid of Kent was Yvonne Munford from Downs, Youth of Kent was Harry Newton in his laser from Whitstable, Rookie was Ed and Guy Grundon from Tankerton. Master of Kent was Simon Green from Downs and the Team of Kent went to Whitstable comprising of Harry Newton, Charlie Campion, Phil Emery and Phoebe Payne.

The day was finished off with prize giving and pasta and drinks on the balcony. Thank you for the great support from EKYA and WYC and to our sponsors, Barton Marine, The Kent Cider Company, Sharp & Enright Chandlery and Spurling Cannon Accountants.
