The Alex Holliday Trust

RYA news recognises our recently formed scholarship - the Alex Holliday Trust.

Last summer, Alex, a student of Queen Elizabeth Grammar School and a keen member of our Sailing Club, suddenly and tragically passed away whilst on a school trip to Cuba. Alex was an active member of the club along with his parents and his sister. In recognition of this, his parents requested donations to each of his beloved sports clubs in his memory. After careful consideration we concluded that the funds we received should go to perpetuating Alex’s passion for sailing, forming The Alex Holliday Trust.

So each year one pupil from year 9 at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, will be selected for a scholarship at the club. The chosen cadet will get a full honorary membership until the end of the year, training to RYA Level 1 in Dinghy Sailing, use of a club boat & suitable equipment, use of club facilities on sailing days, entry into Bart’s Bash and support throughout.

The first pupil selected this year is Hannah Richards. This month Hannah successfully completed the RYA level 1 course at the club with flying colours - a star pupil according to Helen North - our RYA Chief Instructor. Hannah will continue to hone her skills with the aim of competing in "Barts Bash - the biggest sailing race in the world" in September.  We wish her luck in the big race and we are delighted that we can continue to honour Alex in such a positive way.
